Tuesday (Ok, Wednesday) Tidbit: What’s that flower for?

Every Tuesday (and sometimes Wednesday, haha) I bring you a tidbit of information intended to improve your photography skills or even simply your appreciation of photography. This week’s tidbit: that flower button thingy on your point-and-shoot camera.

What’s the flower for?

Most point-and-shoot cameras have them: a button or setting with a flower on it (usually it’s a tulip, don’t ask me why). Sure, putting random flower symbols on a camera helps it look pretty, but more than that, the flower symbol represents the button you’d push to set your camera up for macro photography.

What’s macro photography?

Macro photography is what it sounds like–creating a macro (up close and personal) view of every day objects (particularly small-ish objects). When you set your camera up for macro, your camera lens is able to focus on objects even when their just centimeters away from your lens, something that’s not possible in normal circumstances. In the “old days”, you would need special lenses for your SLR camera to do macro photography. With the advent of digital, now even the most basic point-and-shoot camera has the capability to do macro work.

The major advantage for sticking to macro work with an SLR camera as opposed to with your point-and-shoot is that you have more precise control over your settings and you can change your lenses. There are a lot of options for macro lenses, allowing you to focus even closer than standard macro lenses depending on how you use them. If you want more info on your macro lens options for SLR, feel free to give me a ring and we can talk.

Happy shooting from your San Diego wedding photographers at Vantage Photography!
