Every Tuesday I bring you a tidbit of information meant to help you enhance your photographic skills or simply your appreciation of photography. This week’s tidbit: back it up (aka back up your files).
Why? In the days of film, our way of backing up our files was putting the negatives in plastic sleeves, putting those sleeves in a shoe box, shoving that shoe box under our bed and unless there was a fire or a flood, those negatives sat safe and sound until the day you wished to reprint them (or just take a walk down memory lane). These days, our digital photos sit inside our computers…and the odds of having said computer die on you at some point, resulting in a loss of all that data (all those memories!), aren’t in your favor. Don’t risk it Charlie Brown!–You’ve GOT to back up your important files on a REGULAR basis. Trust me, you’ll sleep better at night.
How? The easiest way to set your mind at ease is to set it and forget it (yes, just like the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie infomercial). Don’t bother with burning your data to a CD/DVD on a regular basis: you WILL forget to do it at some point and who wants another thing on their to do list anyway? Mozy.com to the rescue, the company we at Vantage use to back up all of our important files. Mozy goes into your computer based on the parameters you set, uploads your files to their servers on a regular basis (again, you set the parameters), and Mozy keeps those files tucked away safe and sound until (god forbid) you need to recover your data. And all at $5 a month. Only $5 a month for peace of mind and memories kept safe.
No, I’m not being paid by Mozy. Yes, I love Mozy. No, I don’t gain anything besides a warm fuzzy feeling by recommending them. Yes, I think you should set up your backup system right now. :)
Happy shooting (and backing up) from Vantage!
