Tuesday Tidbit: Using Curved Lines

Every Tuesday, Vantage brings you a tidbit of information meant to help you in your photography skills or simply your appreciation of photography. This week’s tidbit: using curved lines in your images.

Peace, love and curves

As I talked about in the last Tuesday Tidbit, being deliberate about the lines in your image when you compose it is important for influencing how your viewer feels when viewing the image. Obviously your choice of color and subject will play a strong role in how a viewer feels as well (check out this post for more information on color choice), but lines help a lot. To create an image with a sense of harmony, calm and serenity, try to incorporate curved soft lines in your composition. These curved lines create a sense of flow by guiding the viewers eye calmly through the photo…notice where and how your eye travels and what you feel as you look at the images below. Compare that to what you feel as you look at the images in this post where diagonal lines are dominant.
