My baby is four months old!

Ok, four and a half months. But as new parents can attest, it hurts to add that half month (they grow up so fast!) so I’ll round down. Every month around E’s birthday, I do a mini photo session with him to document his growth. Here he is at four months (yeah yeah, four months and one week in the photos…)

He’s here! Elliott Messner joined our little family on March 27, 2011 (his actual due date!) at 8:54am and has been bringing us lots and lots of love (as well as a lack of sleep and a major influx of laundry) since then. As any parent would attest, saying “we’re so happy” is the understatement of the decade….

Maternity Leave

Hiya everyone! Just wanted to make the official announcement that I’ll be on maternity leave starting until mid-May! If you’re interested in booking a wedding with me, you can definitely contact me–I’ll still be checking emails and phone messages throughout the weeks, as well as meeting with potential clients as needed…you just won’t see any updates here on the blog for awhile.

Pictures of the new baby coming soon! Until then, you just get a picture of me. :)

Hiya everyone! I’ve had some requests to post more preggo pictures and I’m happy to say that now I have gorgeous images to share, courtesy of Jamie Lawler Photography. Yippee!
Jamie did an awesome job dealing with my sudden onset of portrait anxiety during our maternity session: I can now safely say that I’m MUCH more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, that’s for sure. In spite of my anxiety and the on-and-off rain that kept us mostly indoors, Jamie did a beautiful job. Michael and I are so thankful for her work and these beautiful memories…

Back from the abyss…with a big (and long overdue) announcement!

Hiya kids! As you may have noticed, I’ve been MIA from this blog for the past month. Michael and I made a last minute decision to extend our holiday vacay in Wisco to THREE whole weeks and then two of my closest friends were in town last week. Hence, the MIA-ness. :) But I’m back…with a big announcement for all y’all.

(Drum roll please)…Michael and I are having a baby boy at the end of March! We are SO incredibly thrilled to meet our little guy and we’ll definitely be sharing plenty of pictures after he makes his debut. I’ll be going on maternity leave from the time he’s born until the end of May but until then, I’m back from the abyss! :)

At 19 weeks pregnant...now I'm 30 weeks!

This is why I shoot weddings

Truth be told, I often feel jaded by the wedding world. So much of the industry is, in a nutshell, about convincing couples that their multi-layer cake sums up their relationship. Michael and I definitely felt that pressure in our own wedding and even got swept up in it a bit. Don’t get me wrong, we loved the idea of throwing a hands-down-amazing party for our family and friends. How many excuses would we get in my life to do that? So we took advantage. And it really was an amazing party.

But ultimately, our wedding wasn’t amazing because of our cake (and our cake really was very good): our wedding was amazing because we were surrounded by the people we loved most in our lives as Michael and I publicly committed our lives to each other. As a growing family, we laughed together and we cried together. We celebrated together.

In the midst of our celebrating, our photographer, Marc Williams, took a photo that I will forever cherish. It wasn’t a picture of my shoes or the flowers and it wasn’t even a picture of me and Michael: it was a picture of my parents. This photo, to me, sums up the the things I love most about them: my dad, microphone in hand with the smile on his face that he gets after he’s made a joke (probably a pun), his face filled with intense love and pride for his daughter and new son-in-law; my mom, laughing that loud, throw-her-head-back laugh of hers that I’ve heard all my life, looking to her friends and family to include them in the joke, and simply enjoying the moment. Marc gave me this moment to hold in my hands forever. He gave me an amazing gift.

This image is why I shoot weddings.

I want to capture these moments for my couples. I want to give them photographs of one of the happiest days of their lives, photos they will cherish for the rest of their lives. I want them to look at the photos I took and be flooded with the emotions they felt that day, even if they’re looking at their photos fifty years after the fact.

I always say that if I can make someone cry tears of joy when they look at their photos, I’ve done my job. Marc did his. I am forever grateful.

A trip to the Salton Sea

Recently, Michael and I, along with Michael’s brother (and fellow photographer) Matt, took a day trip to explore the area around the Salton Sea in Southern California. A lot has already been written about this area, so I’ll let the images speak for themselves. Suffice it to say, it’s a photographer’s playground: gorgeous light, eerie backdrops, quirky scenes. And if anyone is looking for a cool place to do a Trash The Dress session….I’m your girl when it comes to the Salton Sea. For real. I’m there in a heartbeat.
