Engaged! | Lisa + Bill | Little Italy + Balboa Park, San Diego | Portrait Photographer

You know those people who just bubble over with enthusiasm and love and good vibes? That’s Lisa. Lisa contacted me last year about shooting her wedding in Wisconsin (I shoot about four or five weddings a year back in my home state) and I knew right away that this was the type of woman I’d like to work with. Just a super good person all around. The serendipitous thing is that she had moved to San Diego with her fiance, Bill, just about six months prior to contacting me. So we were able to do our initial consult and the e-session here in SD and then we’ll rendezvous back in Milwaukee in September. Convenient, no? :) I had a really fun time working with Bill and Lisa during their session–the session was laid back, they were super patient with me as I worked different angles and different ideas, and they had some great ideas of their own. And it made me stoked for their wedding, for sure.

Married! | Jen + Rich | The Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, California

I’ve known Jen and her family since I was a wee one: my mom and Jen’s mom went to graduate school together in Milwaukee and quickly became life-long friends. However, since we didn’t live in the same town, Jen and I and our sisters didn’t get to hang out a ton as kids (I think our moms preferred to leave us at home so they could have their own girls nights anyway) and didn’t get to know each other super well. Then, small world, it turns out that Jen and I are now living in the same city of San Diego, way far away from ol’ Wisconsin. I know, right? So it just felt natural for me and Michael to shoot her wedding….and I’m so glad I got the chance to know Jen better throughout the planning process. As evident in the photos, she’s just one of those people that makes everyone else around her smile a little bigger: she’s got a gigantic laugh, a fun sense of humor and a big heart. And she and Rich know how to throw a party, that is for sure. :)

Married! | Shannon + Jeremiah | Hanna Winery, Healdsburg, California

Shannon and Jeremiah were married on the breathtaking grounds of the Hanna Winery and Vineyard in Healdsburg, California. They were surrounded by their closest family and friends, most of whom happened to be from, ahem, Wisconsin so….yeah, Michael and I were happy campers and felt right at home. And do you remember the Love Rally of the Decade? Shannon is Sara’s best friend which means, again, happy campers.

Shannon and Jeremiah were really special to work with–they have this way of looking each other where it seems like the world stops, they only see each other and you can tell that they just feel…safe. Also, I fully believe that if a relationship can survive long-distance, it can survive anything. In their case, the relationship has survived three tours in Iraq between the two of them (they’re both officers in the military). Me thinks they’ll work out just fine.

Married! | Lotta + Brian | The Lodge at Torrey Pines, San Diego, California

I’m always a stickler for small, intimate weddings, especially when they’re held on the gorgeous grounds of The Lodge at Torrey Pines. What’s not to love about this place? I was also excited to see Lotta and Brian’s wedding in action because Lotta had given me the heads up on a unique part of their ceremony: the Anam Cara Pebble Ceremony. It’s a Celtic celebration of joining with one’s “soul friend” and honoring the four elements of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. First, Lotta and Brian drank water from the “loving cup”. Then each guest was given a small stone and asked to envision the future they’d like for the new couple, then send those wishes into the stone. Each person then placed the stones together into a glass container, as Lotta and Brian poured the remaining water into the glass, then lit a floating candle to place in the water. How cool is that?

Lotta and Brian celebrated their love surrounded by their family…Lotta’s parents even came all the way from Sweden and her sister Skyped in at 5am Swedish time. And P.S.? Listening to people speak in Swedish might be my new favorite past time. I have no idea what they’re saying, but it sure is pretty….

Married! | Sarah + Tyson | Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point, California

I was soooooo super excited to shoot Sarah and Tyson’s wedding for so many reasons, a big one being that it was planned and directed by the ah-maze-ing ladies of Luxe Events. When you’ve got Jenny designing your wedding, you know you’re gonna get eye-candy all over the place, not to mention an event that puts guests’ comfort front and center as well as a timeline that makes sense and flows well. True to form, Sarah and Tyson’s wedding was gorgeous, heartfelt, super fun and without a hitch. As one of Sarah’s bridesmaid’s put it toward the end of the night, “Sarah was always the friend who was watching tv shows about weddings…if it was about a wedding, she was watching it. And today? Well everything about today felt sooooo Sarah. It was perfect, like a fairy tale.” To one of the sweeter couples I’ve ever worked with, Sarah and Tyson, thank you for letting me and Jamie take part in this beautiful day…

Engaged! | Sarah and TJ | University of San Diego, San Diego, California

Sarah and TJ are college friends of the fantabulous Annie+Brian duo and approached me at the wedding about doing their engagement session the next time they were in town (they live in Arizona and are getting married in Hawaii). A chance to work with friends of Annie and Brian? Yes please! The next time they were in town, we got together at the University of San Diego, Sarah and TJ’s alma mater – we even took some photos at the very spot where they first laid eyes on each other (the photo of them sitting on the posts). Sarah and TJ were a real joy to work with – they were so comfortable with each other as well as in front of the camera – and I’m so pleased with the results of this session. I just loved watching these two relish in each other’s company…

Married! | Robin + David | The Dana Hotel, Mission Bay, California

You might remember Robin and Dave from their Little Italy engagement session back in February…you know, the super fun, smiley couple that adored each other? Yep, that’s them. It was clear at their wedding that the feelings of adoration had only grown stronger in the interim, too. Robin and Dave left many guests in tears after reading their personalized vows to each other – I, myself, got a little misty eyed even. The wedding was gorgeous, too: no surprise since it was planned with help from the awesome ladies of Ever After Events. I loved spending the day with this fun-loving, happy-hearted couple and their guests. Oh, and you want more proof of how fun they are? They surprised their guests with a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream booth. Yeah. Ben and Jerry’s. As in, ice cream. YUM!!! A big thank you to them for letting us share the day. (And a big thank you to Dexter Lo for helping Michael and me to document it!)

Married! | Annie + Brian | Immaculata and Scripps Forum, San Diego

It’s hard to sum up how amazing Annie and Brian are as a couple. I think Brian’s sister said it best during her toast when she said something like “I didn’t really believe in soul mates until I saw the two of you together.” Exactly. There is a profound level of respect between them and they have an abundance of love for each other as well as for their families and friends. And they really know how to have fun and not take themselves too seriously. I just kept thinking throughout the day “this couple is gonna make it.” They just….fit.

The wedding day itself really fit them too. The pastor who married them, Father Bonnaventure, was from a small village in Uganda where Annie and Brian helped to build a children’s hospital…they got married at the Immaculata on the University San Diego campus where they first met…they danced their first dance to a song they discovered together while abroad (it’s featured on the slideshow in this post)…they were surrounded by people that so obviously loved them that it made me teary eyed.

I only hope that the images I created (along with the awesome Dexter Lo) can do justice to this couple and their beautiful day.

Married! | Melissa + John| Scripps Forum, La Jolla

Melissa and John felt like old friends from the first time we met, which was reinforced at their engagement session and then again at their wedding. They’re good peeps, for sure: super laid-back, thoughtful and playful.

Both are finishing their PhDs at UCSD, Melissa in marine biology and John in chemistry (he just defended his dissertation! Go John!) so it was perfect that they get married at Scripps Seaside Forum, a part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography on the UCSD campus. And their wedding was exactly that as they are as a couple: Melissa and John made it clear from the beginning that everyone at the wedding was extremely important to them and that they were there to celebrate their love and have a grand ol’ time with their friends and family….and they didn’t disappoint. The day was complete with home-brew made by John and his friends, a big dessert bar and tons of dancing and laughter. Oh! And how cool is this? The day before the wedding, they hosted a Couple’s Yoga session for all the out-of-town guests, which is featured at the beginning of the slide show. I must say, it was the loudest and most fun yoga session I’ve ever been to (and definitely the first I ever photographed!!).

Engaged! | Annie + Brian | Belmont Park, San Diego, California

Annie and Brian are my kinda people: they both love to travel and do good in the world (they spent time in Uganda helping to set up a local hospital….Annie is in her second year of Teach for America…Brian is training to be a doctor), they’re super playful (during their session, we passed a giant ice cream cone and I thought “dude, a giant ice cream cone! let’s take a picture with that!” just as Brian said aloud “A giant ice cream cone! Let’s take a bite out of it!”) and they’re waaaaay in love (check out their pics for proof). I really really really can’t wait to spend more time with them at their wedding and to meet the families that helped make them the super cool people they are today.
