Becky + Trey: Newport Beach, California

This past Monday I packed up my gear and drove north for an engagement session in Newport Beach with Becky and Trey. I was already booked on the day of their Wisconsin wedding (they’re getting married in a month!) but we did the next best thing and did an engagement session in Cali (they’re living in Santa Monica now).

Monday was EXTRA special because my good friend and fellow photographer Jamie Lawler made the trip up with me to be my assistant/entertainment for the evening. Complete with shadow puppet birds attacking my Gary Fong Lightsphere:

This is what we were doing as Becky and Trey walked up. Classy, right? Yeah, that’s how we roll.

ANYway, I had a great time getting to know Becky and Trey. Becky was a total trooper, braving the windy day and chilly evening to do the beach shots….and Trey survived a gelato attack. Apparently every time he eats ice cream, he dumps some on his shirt and Monday was no exception. :) And in spite of it all, we created some beautiful images together…

WPJA Q2 2009 Contest Results

The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) holds a competition four times a year and members are invited to submit their best images for judging. Every quarter, I am deeply humbled by the amazing images that wedding photojournalists all over the world are creating–truly beautiful stuff. And because of that,  I’m always surprised and excited when I see my own images up in the gallery of contest winners.

This quarter, WPJA introduced a new category: ring details. For those of you that follow my work, you know that I LURVE ring detail shots….and I guess the judges liked my ring detail shots too because the two images I submitted to the category took sixteenth and seventeeth place. Not a bad way to start off my morning. :)

Tuesday Tidbit: Bokeh wha???

Every Tuesday I bring you a tidbit of information meant to enhance your photography skills or simply your appreciation of photography. This week’s tidbit: the definition of bokeh.

Bokeh what?

Bokeh. Pronounced Bow-Kah, emphasis on Bow, a Japenese word (allegedly) meaning “blur” or “haze”. Photographers use the word to describe the quality of the out-of-focus areas of an image created by a lens using a shallow depth of field, as in “that lens has some great bokeh”. For an example, check out the image below; the bokeh is found behind and to the right of Jamie, the circular spots of light reflecting off the trees.

All lenses have a different bokeh effect and some photographers can get really obsessive over it. Which is good, because then they usually upload their tests and findings on bokeh to the web for all of us to enjoy, like this guy. Yay for obsessive photographers combined with the power of internet!

Happy shooting from Vantage!

Dana + Jonathan: San Diego, California

One of the benefits of transitioning a business from one part of the country to another and building up my local clientele is that I have more time to be a second shooter for talented photographers in the San Diego area. One of those talented photographers is Carrie McCluskey, with whom I had the privilege of working back in June (yeah, I know, I’m just blogging it now….I’m late).

Dana and Jonathan were married at the Admiral Kidd Conference Center with GORGEOUS views of the San Diego skyline. I loved hearing their “how we met” story: both were in New York City as tourists and happened to be hanging out at the same hotel lobby one evening. They struck up a conversation and totally hit it off. And even though Jonathan was from Sweden, and was leaving soon, they liked each other so much that they decided to stick it out…and Dana eventually moved to Sweden to be with him! Now THAT is commitment.

Beautiful storytelling: One in Eight Million

I’ve recently been digging deep into the world of multimedia journalism and am now an avid reader of such sites as the duckrabbit blog and Adam Westbrook’s blog. One of the sites I’ve discovered, which I’m just giddy to share with everyone I know, is the project produced for the New York Times and photographed by Todd Heisler: One In Eight Million. Every week they create a two to three minute slideshow, including a recorded interview, of one person that lives in New York City, hence “one in eight million”. If you love learning about other people, hearing some of their most vulnerable thoughts, seeing beautiful images, and simply learning about the human condition, this site is for you. Get lost in the beauty/sadness/complexity of others’ lives. Ab-so-lute-ly beautiful.

Shows I particularly recommend: The Singing Waitress and The Baby Deliverer.

Enjoy!
